What your TOEIC score means — and what you can do with it

A number on its own doesn’t say much. Here’s what each band actually unlocks for work and study, with the CEFR level and the ETS/IIBC proficiency level (A–E) for each.

990 Perfect · C1 · A

A perfect score. It signals near-native reading and listening and stands out on any résumé — the “満点 (manten)” many high achievers in Japan chase. More than enough for any English-required role.

900–990 Advanced · C1 · A

Top-tier. Opens international and English-facing roles, global trading companies, airlines and interpreting-adjacent work, and impresses admissions committees. You can work and study comfortably in English.

785–895 Upper-int · B2 · A/B

The most common hiring bar. B2 is the level most employers and universities look for; you can handle meetings, email and reports in English. A strong, employable score for global companies in Japan and Korea.

730–780 Solid · B1/B2 · B

Level B — you can satisfy most everyday and limited work demands. A frequent benchmark for large companies and for promotion (昇進) in Japan, and competitive for many roles in Korea.

550–725 Intermediate · B1 · C

You can handle familiar, predictable situations. Around or above the global average — enough for many general roles and a good base to push toward the 785 (B2) hiring bar.

225–545 Elementary · A2 · D

You understand basic, high-frequency English. A good milestone for beginners — and exactly where TOEIC Bridge practice helps you build up before the main test.

“What can I do with an 880?” (or a 990, 800, 700…)

An 880 is a strong B2/level-A score — comfortably past the 785 hiring bar, competitive for global companies, university programs and many public-enterprise (공기업) and large-corporate (대기업) applications in Korea. A 990 is the maximum and pure prestige. An 800 clears most corporate requirements; a 700 is a solid general-purpose score that many employers accept and a realistic first target if you’re starting from the average. Requirements always vary by employer and program, so check the specific cutoff — then use the tool above to see how many correct answers you need to reach it.

How TOEIC scoring works

The TOEIC® Listening & Reading test has 200 multiple-choice questions — 100 Listening and 100 Reading. Each section is converted to a scaled score from 5 to 495, and the two add up to a total from 10 to 990.

The score is not a percentage. ETS uses statistical equating so the same ability earns the same scaled score across different test forms, even though forms differ slightly in difficulty. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so always answer every question. Scores are valid for two years.

TOEIC scores, straight answers

What is a good TOEIC score?
On the Listening & Reading test (scored 10 to 990), 785 and above is widely considered good and matches CEFR B2 — the level most employers and universities look for. 860+ reaches the top ETS/IIBC proficiency band (A), and 900+ is excellent, near C1. What counts as “good” depends on your goal: set a target band and practise toward it with a free full-length mock.
What is the highest TOEIC score?
The maximum TOEIC Listening & Reading score is 990 — a perfect score (495 on Listening plus 495 on Reading). The Speaking and Writing tests are each scored 0 to 200. You usually don’t need every answer correct for 990; missing a couple can still round to the top on some forms.
What is the average TOEIC score?
The worldwide TOEIC Listening & Reading average is roughly 600, but it varies a lot by country, test population and year. A score above the average and toward 785 (B2) puts you in strong shape for most jobs.
How is the TOEIC Listening & Reading test scored?
Each section is converted to a scaled score from 5 to 495 (total 10 to 990) using statistical equating, not a raw percentage. Because forms differ slightly in difficulty, the same number of correct answers can map to a slightly different scaled score — which is why this tool gives an estimate.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the TOEIC?
No. There is no deduction for incorrect answers, so answer every question — even a blind guess can only help. Blanks and wrong answers are treated the same.
How many questions can I get wrong and still score 900+?
Roughly, getting about 90+ out of 100 right in each section lands you near 900+. Use the tool above: set both sliders around 90 and the estimate lands in the low-900s. The exact cutoff shifts a little by form.
How does the TOEIC score map to the CEFR?
Approximately: 945–990 is C1, 785–940 is B2, 550–780 is B1, 275–545 is A2 and 120–270 is A1. The mapping follows ETS’s published concordance and is approximate.
What are the TOEIC proficiency levels (A–E)?
ETS/IIBC group Listening & Reading totals into five levels: A (860–990), B (730–855), C (470–725), D (220–465) and E (10–215). Level A means you can communicate effectively in almost any situation; level B means you can handle most everyday and limited work demands.
What TOEIC score do I need for a job?
It varies by employer and country. In Japan, many companies use 600–730 as a general benchmark, while trading companies and global roles often want 730–860+. In Korea, large corporations (대기업) commonly look for 700–900 and public enterprises (공기업) frequently 700–850, depending on the role. Always check the specific requirement, then use this converter to see how many correct answers you need.
What TOEIC score do universities require?
Requirements differ by institution and program, but many universities use TOEIC for admission, credit or graduation and set cutoffs anywhere from 550 to 800+. Programs taught partly in English tend to ask for B2 (785+).
How accurate is this TOEIC score converter?
It is a realistic estimate. ETS equates each form separately and doesn’t publish a single official raw-to-scaled formula, so your real score can differ by a few points — treat the number as roughly ±25.
What is the difference between TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS?
TOEIC measures everyday and workplace English and is used mostly for jobs and companies (Listening & Reading 10–990). TOEFL and IELTS measure academic English and are used mostly for university admission and study abroad. They use different scales, so scores don’t convert exactly — pick the test your employer or school asks for.
What are the different types of TOEIC tests?

How long is a TOEIC score valid?
TOEIC scores are officially valid for two years, because language ability changes over time. Many people retake to keep a current score for job applications.
