The one thing to understand first
In Korea, a TOEIC score is rarely the thing that gets you hired. For most employers it is a gate to qualify, and the real decision is made by the written test, the interview, and, increasingly, your English Speaking grade. So the goal is not a perfect 990, it is clearing the bar your target sets, then proving you can actually speak.
The common floor to be competitive across major Korean employers. Below it, many applications are screened out at the qualification stage.
Clears most application qualifications comfortably and is competitive for conglomerate roles. A sensible number to aim for.
For many 대기업 this matters more than your L&R score. Prepare it in parallel, it is where applicants most often fall short.
공기업 (public enterprises): TOEIC as a qualification
Under NCS-based blind hiring, many public enterprises use TOEIC mainly as an application qualification (지원 자격), a threshold to apply, while the NCS written test and interview decide the outcome. Some do score it on a points rubric.
Often a minimum near 700 just to submit your application. Meeting it keeps you in; it usually is not added into the final score.
Where TOEIC is scored, some 공기업 award maximum points around 950 and step down through the 800s to about 750. Higher helps, but only within a small band of the total.
Exact 커트라인 and weighting change by enterprise and year. Always read the official recruitment notice (채용 공고) for the real number.
대기업 (conglomerates): Speaking is the real bar
Large Korean companies increasingly require an English Speaking grade, OPIc or TOEIC Speaking, on top of, or instead of, a TOEIC L&R score. English Speaking tests spread across Korea after Samsung added one to its hiring, and now over a thousand companies use OPIc.
Reported entry requirements center on a TOEIC Speaking grade around Level 5 or an OPIc grade around Intermediate Low (IL), with engineering majors often one level lower, and higher for some divisions.
Where a TOEIC Listening & Reading score is used, this is the typical competitive range for conglomerate applications.
A practical Speaking target for many roles. Customer-facing and global tracks want the higher end.
Grades and cutlines above are drawn from public reporting and change frequently; treat them as general guidance and confirm each company's current posting.
