(late application 13,200 yen)
Pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB), at a convenience store (Seven-Eleven, Lawson, Ministop, FamilyMart, Seicomart) or with Rakuten Pay. Fees are not refunded and the test date cannot be changed, but you can change your test site until applications close.
How to apply as a foreign resident
Sign up for a free membership on the TOEIC Application Site (mp.toeic.or.jp). The sign-up and application pages are in Japanese; IIBC publishes English guidelines you can follow alongside.
Type your name as it appears on your residence card or passport, since it must match your ID on test day.
Choose the test date and the test site (region) before the deadline.
By card, at a convenience store or with Rakuten Pay.
Attach a 4 cm x 3 cm photo taken within the last 6 months to the admission ticket and bring it with your ID.
2026 TOEIC test dates and deadlines
IIBC holds the public test 18 times a year on Saturdays or Sundays, each in the morning and the afternoon (check-in 9:25 to 9:55 and 14:05 to 14:35).
Dates from IIBC's 2026 schedule, checked 9 October 2026.
Where you take the test
When you apply you choose a test site, which is a region. IIBC assigns the actual venue after applications close, based on that site and your postcode. It may not be the venue nearest to you, it can change each time, and you cannot ask to change it.
ID and photo for foreign residents
Non-Japanese test takers can use a residence card, a passport, a special permanent resident certificate, or a physical My Number card. Foreign-issued IDs other than passports are not accepted, and neither are driving licences or student IDs. You also need a 4 cm x 3 cm photo, taken within 6 months, attached to your admission ticket.

How long is a TOEIC score valid in Japan?
ETS does not report or validate scores more than two years old, and certificates are not reissued after two years. In practice employers and schools set their own limit, and 2 years is the most common, so check the requirement before you rely on an old score. Our score validity calculator shows your 2-year date.
Public test or IP test?
Many companies and universities run TOEIC IP (Institutional Program) tests for groups of 10 or more. They cost 4,230 yen per person and reuse questions from past public tests, but they produce a Score Report, not the Official Score Certificate of the public test. If an employer asks for an official certificate, take the public test.
TOEIC or JLPT for jobs in Japan?
They test different languages, so the question is which language the job runs in. Japanese-language roles look at the JLPT, with N2 as the usual baseline. English-facing roles and job hunting at Japanese companies use the TOEIC, with common targets of 600, 730 and 800+. Bilingual, global-track profiles often carry both.
| TOEIC (Listening & Reading) | JLPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Language | English | Japanese |
| What it proves | Your English, to Japanese and Korean employers | Your Japanese, for jobs, study and visas in Japan |
| Score | 10–990 | Five levels, N5 (basic) to N1 (near-native) |
| Held in Japan | 18 times a year | Twice a year (July and December) |
