The TOEIC is the most widely used English-language test for work in the world. The scale of it is the reason a score means something on your résumé.
TOEIC stands for the Test of English for International Communication. It was created in 1979 at the request of Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now METI) and developed by ETS, the non-profit behind the TOEFL and GRE. Its job was simple and it hasn't changed: give employers one fair, objective way to compare how well people can actually use English in a real workplace, in meetings, on calls, in emails, notices and reports. ETS has developed and run the program for more than four decades, and that long, unbroken track record is a big part of why a TOEIC score still carries weight with employers today.4

A note on accuracy: ETS's official method publishes per-section minimum scores at each CEFR level and deliberately avoids rigid cut-offs, the combined totals above are the widely-used interpretation, useful as a guide, not an official boundary.11
