The short version
The TOEIC Listening & Reading is scored from 10 to 990: 5 to 495 for Listening and 5 to 495 for Reading. In France a public session costs 189 euros, results are valid 2 years, and the level ETS lists as frequently required by higher education and companies is 785, the B2 level. France averages 719 (Listening 383, Reading 336) in ETS's 2025 worldwide report.
The B1 threshold: 275 in Listening plus 275 in Reading.
400 in Listening plus 385 in Reading. Engineering schools and many employers use it.
490 in Listening plus 455 in Reading.
Each section tops out at 495.
TOEIC score and CEFR levels: the official grid
ETS maps each section to a CEFR level. The totals are estimates made by adding the two section thresholds, and ETS recommends judging Listening and Reading separately.
| CEFR level | Listening (minimum) | Reading (minimum) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 490 | 455 | 945 |
| B2 | 400 | 385 | 785 |
| B1 | 275 | 275 | 550 |
| A2 | 110 | 115 | 225 |
| A1 | 60 | 60 | 120 |
ETS marks 785 (B2) as the minimum frequently required by companies and higher education. Speaking and Writing have their own thresholds (B2: Speaking 160, Writing 150).
Engineering schools: B2, and each school sets the score
The CTI requires B2 in all competences to award the engineering degree (C1 recommended), through an internal evaluation plus an external test. It does not name the TOEIC or a score; each school decides.
B2, set at TOEIC 815, by external certification
no student graduates with less
plus yearly thresholds to move up a year
Business schools: admission minimums, not graduation rules
For the grandes écoles, the published TOEIC numbers are mostly entry requirements for direct admission. Of the schools checked, only KEDGE's International BBA publishes a graduation score.

Can the CPF pay for the TOEIC?
Only as part of an English course. Since its CPF listing was renewed in July 2025, the TOEIC 4-Skills certification (now called TOEIC 4 Compétences) can be paid for with the CPF when it comes with a training course. A standalone Listening & Reading public session is paid by you.
Results and validity
On the computer-based test your digital score report arrives the same day; on paper it takes 10 to 15 days, and Speaking & Writing takes 7 days. Scores are valid for 2 years, and a public-session score is recognised worldwide.
Licence, BUT and BTS: no national TOEIC rule
A 2020 decree and order required an external English certification for the Licence, DUT/BUT and BTS. The Conseil d'État annulled them on 7 June 2022, so these diplomas no longer require it by national rule, though some programmes still use the TOEIC. The requirement for the Licence professionnelle comes from an earlier text and was kept.
